Show globes, also known as carboys, were traditionally clear glass containers filled with colored liquid and displayed in apothecaries' windows. According to myth, the liquid's color served as a signal to travelers-red indicating a plague or quarantine and green signaling safety.

The glass jar does show some cracks that appear to have been repaired, along with some staining from its previous use.
