Antique Oak Merchant's Desk/General Store Counter, Work Station, Tambor Cabinet

Antique Oak Merchant’s Desk General Store Counter Tambour Roll Top Cabinet

This stunning desk/store counter measures approximately 72" wide, 50 1/2" tall and 32 1/2" deep.

The working side features a broad elevated writing or work surface (68" x 31") surrounded by a raised oak gallery. Directly below the top are three wide drawers with shaped wooden pulls. The lower left side contains a bank of five additional drawers, while the center has a recessed kneehole area with a paneled back and raised footrest.

The right side features an especially interesting tambour or roll-front compartment. When opened, the compartment reveals multiple vertical wooden dividers designed for organizing papers, documents, ledgers or business materials. An additional drawer is located below the tambour compartment.

The opposite side is beautifully finished rather than being a typical unfinished desk back. Large paneled sliding doors provide access to additional interior storage with shelving. This double-sided configuration makes the piece particularly appealing as a merchant’s desk, general store counter, reception desk, retail counter, library desk or statement piece for a home office.

The desk shows wear consistent with considerable age and commercial use, including scratches, scuffs, finish wear, stains, marks, edge wear and other surface imperfections. There is visible wear around the base and work areas. The drawers, tambour section, sliding panels, interior compartments, hardware and overall condition are shown in the photographs. Please examine all photos carefully as they are an important part of the description.

This is a substantial and unusual piece of antique commercial furniture with excellent storage and an impressive presence. The double-sided construction makes the desk especially versatile and allows the finished cabinet side to remain visible when the piece is positioned away from a wall.
